A joker or a wild card is selected randomly at the beginning of a rummy game. In 13-card rummy, have two printed jokers and seven wild card jokers. And if you manage to get your hands on some of them, then your game becomes much easier. Just remember to use them wisely. You can use them to make your second or impure sequence (the first one being a pure sequence) and to meld sets. Here are some ways in which you can use the joker well to be able to win a game of rummy.
Use high value cards: It is always encouraged to use a joker with cards of higher value, especially if you are a beginner. The point of this is to reduce your points as the joker, in any case, is worth zero points. Once you are an experienced player, you can use the joker as per your strategy and game.
Group cards with Joker: Try to whatever extent you can to club the joker with your cards. In case your opponent declares a show or in case your internet connection drops, you will at least have fewer points as the joker is valued at zero in all rummy games.
Discarding of cards: Once the joker from the open card slot is displayed, you want to discard any of its adjacent cards. For example: if the joker is 8 of clubs, then it is wise to get rid of 5, 6,7 and 9 of clubs as well. This will also throw your opponents a little off.
Checking open slot joker: Start making sets and sequences only after you have seen the open joker, and not just right away after the cards are dealt.This way, your chances of discarding any useful card are lessand you will be able to pick up better cards from the closed deck.
There are also versions of rummy which are played without the joker. This is not an easy way to play as it takes a lot more time and the game itself becomes very hard. Of course, even when you are playing rummy with jokers, there are certain rummy rules in order to win.
As we all know by now, there are two sequences in a game of 13-card rummy – a pure sequence and an impure sequence. A joker cannot be used while making the pure sequence unless it is part of a run and even then, it is not encouraged.
The impure sequence, on the other hand, is one that a joker can be used for.
